Solid Ash Dining Tables

Every dining table in the collection is made from solid ash — boards selected, jointed and finished by hand, never veneered board with a wrapped edge. Ash is a ring-porous hardwood: it is hard enough to take daily use on a dining surface, its open grain stays legible under a polish, and it warms in tone over the years rather than yellowing the way many pale woods do. Under Indian humidity swings it moves less than the softer woods commonly used at this price point, which matters most on a table top, where any movement shows.

Choosing a piece.

Sizing is the decision that gets made wrong most often. A 1200 mm round table seats four and, at a squeeze, five; 1600 × 900 mm seats six; 2000 × 1000 mm seats eight, or ten with narrow chairs. The width matters as much as the length — at 900 mm there is no room to run serving dishes down the centre once more than six people are seated, which is why the 2000 mm tables in this collection are drawn at 1000 mm. Whatever the size, allow around 900 mm of clear floor from each table edge so chairs can be pulled out and someone can walk behind them.

The bases are where the pieces separate. Gyre carries the top on interlaced rings of steam-bent ash, each ring bent as one continuous length rather than assembled from curved segments, landing on a polished steel foot in the round version. Weir uses crossed lyre legs set well inboard of the ends, which leaves the head seats completely clear of any structure. Ford is deliberately plain — four tapered legs and a clean edge — for rooms where the table should not be the loudest object in it.
