Solid Ash Dining Chairs & Armchairs

Five dining chairs, all in solid ash. The backs are steam-bent rather than cut from a board, which is the difference that decides how long a chair lasts: when a curve is sawn out of flat stock, the grain runs across the narrowest point and the chair eventually fails there. Steam-bending softens the fibres and re-forms them, so the grain follows the curve and the thinnest section stays the strongest.

Choosing a piece.

Choosing between them is mostly a question of width and how the table will be used. Current is armless at 460 mm and the space-efficient option — eight of them fit a 2000 mm table without touching, and six fit a 1600 mm. Reed at 530 mm has arms but tucks in nearly as close, because the comb-back and saddled seat carry the comfort instead of bulk. Crest, Marsh and Wave are full armchairs at 580–590 mm and are usually specified in pairs at the heads of the table rather than all the way round.

Marsh is the chair to sit in for three hours. It wraps closest at the waist and eases outward into bent-back arms, and it is the one most often chosen for a study or a breakfast table where people stay put. Wave is the sculptural one, with a single arm sweeping unbroken around a floating back. Crest is the quiet one, for a room where the table is already doing the work.

Seats are carved as standard — saddled into a shallow dish that follows the body, with no fabric to wear out. Any chair can be specified with a leather or bouclé seat instead.
