Solid Ash Coffee & Side Tables

Low tables are seen from a seated position and almost never from standing, which is why the detail in this group sits underneath rather than on top. Mere loops and scallops where a side table would normally have three plain sticks. Cairn's base is a stack of carved ash forms set on each other like river stones — worked by hand, so no two stack identically. Scarp cantilevers two tiers off raked legs, leaving the front completely open.

Choosing a piece.

Pool is the coffee table: 1000 × 600 mm at 400 mm high, with no sharp corners anywhere. The top is drawn as a soft rectangle and the legs are rounded in section, so there is no edge to catch a shin — the reason it holds up in a family living room. At 400 mm it sits just below the seat of most sofas, which is where a coffee table has to be if it is going to be reached without leaning forward. Leave around 400 mm of clear floor between the sofa edge and the table.

The side tables cover three different gaps. Mere at Ø580 × 550 mm is the tallest and sits level with the arm of a lounge chair, so it works beside Heron as somewhere to actually set a glass. Cairn at Ø450 × 500 mm is the smallest and slots in where nothing else fits, or works in pairs beside a bed as an alternative to matched nightstands. Scarp at 800 × 350 mm is the narrow one — beside a sofa arm, along a corridor, or as a bedside table with books on the lower tier.
